Everything you reach for

Tabs that remember

Drag to reorder, color them, and pick up where you left off. Unsaved text is backed up every few seconds.

Find, Replace, Find in Files

Normal, extended and regex search, whole word, match case, in selection, across every open file or a folder.

213 languages

Syntax highlighting for code, config and logs, with word autocomplete that works in any language.

Function List & bookmarks

Jump between functions, classes and Markdown headings. Bookmarks follow your edits.

Follow live logs

Monitoring mode reads only what was appended, like tail -f, without reloading the file.

Any encoding, any line ending

UTF-8, UTF-16, legacy code pages, CRLF or LF, detected on open and kept on save.

Install

  1. Download the zip above, open it, and drag PadNote.app into Applications.
  2. The first time, right-click PadNote and choose Open, then Open again. macOS asks once because the app isn't notarized yet.
  3. Want it in the terminal? In PadNote choose Help ▸ Install Command Line Tool, then open files with pn notes.txt.

Updates

PadNote checks once a day and shows a bar when a new version is out. Click Update and it downloads, verifies and restarts itself. Your open tabs come back. You can also choose Help ▸ Check for Updates…, or run pn --update.

Every update is signed. PadNote refuses any download whose signature doesn't match the key built into the app.
